A simpler route up a straight flight.

If your staircase travels in one direction without a turn, a straight stair lift is the first category to explore.

Look beyond the step count.

A staircase can look straightforward while still having an awkward doorway or a tight landing. Start by describing the whole route: where the chair would start, where it would stop, and how you would approach it.

What to discuss at an assessment

  • Entry and exit: Is there room to approach the seat and turn away from the stair edge?
  • Doors and passages: Could the rail obstruct a door or the route to another room?
  • Other stair users: How much clear walking space would remain with the chair folded?
  • Comfort and reach: Can the intended user operate the controls and use the seat comfortably?

One landing can change the plan.

If the stairs turn or lead to another flight, don’t assume two separate lifts are the best answer. Transfers at a landing can be difficult. Compare the complete journey with a provider before selecting a layout.

Get the full specification in writing.

Ask for the proposed model, rail position, available options, installation scope, and warranty terms. Use the cost guide to compare estimates on the same basis.
