A more considered way to your front door.

Exterior steps need an exterior-rated solution. Start with the entrance you want to use and the approach on both sides of the stairs.

Begin with the entire entrance.

A porch or deck assessment should include the path to the stairs, the steps themselves, and the space beyond the top landing. An accessible ride is only useful if the rest of the route works too.

Questions for an outdoor assessment

  • Exposure: What weather conditions is the proposed model rated for?
  • Ground conditions: Are the approach and transfer areas stable and unobstructed?
  • Power: What electrical provision does the selected equipment require?
  • Shared access: Could a rail, cover, or parked chair obstruct another person’s route?
  • Upkeep: What maintenance and protection does the manufacturer require?

Don’t substitute indoor equipment.

Ask the provider to identify the exact outdoor-rated model and explain its operating limits. A cover alone does not establish that an indoor lift is suitable outside.

Compare other access routes as well.

If someone needs to remain in a wheelchair, discuss whether a platform lift, ramp, or another entrance would better meet their access requirements. Product suitability needs an individual assessment.
